How To Beat Lower Back Pain: Expert Physical Therapists Simple Three Step Guide

Lower back pain is a common issue that can affect anyone, from active athletes to office workers. This week's podcast episode delves into the various causes of lower back pain and offers insights into managing and treating it. If you suffer from lower back pain, or know someone who does, these insights will empower you to find relief and improve your health.

Understanding Lower Back Pain: Causes and Contributors

Lower back pain has numerous causes, from sudden injuries to degenerative conditions. Acute injuries, such as falling off a horse like in my case, can lead to immediate pain. Degenerative conditions like disc issues or spondylolisthesis develop over time and cause chronic discomfort.

Muscle imbalances also play a significant role. When certain muscles are weaker than others, it can lead to strain and discomfort in the lower back. Scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine, is another common cause of lower back pain.

Prolonged sitting, especially in poor posture, contributes to muscle deconditioning and back pain. People who sit at desks all day or have a sedentary lifestyle often suffer from lower back issues due to reduced muscle activity and flexibility.

During the podcast, expert physical therapist Phil White emphasizes the importance of recognizing these various causes to determine the best course of action.

The Importance of Professional Diagnosis

While it's tempting to self-diagnose lower back pain, it's crucial to seek professional advice. The exact cause of your lower back pain can vary greatly, and a correct diagnosis is key to effective treatment. The podcast highlights the different diagnostic methods used by professionals, such as MRIs, X-rays, and physical examinations.

A professional diagnosis helps identify the root cause of the pain and guides the best treatment approach. Whether it's a structural issue, like a herniated disc, or a muscular problem, knowing the source of the pain allows for targeted exercises and therapies.

Strategies for Managing and Treating Lower Back Pain

Once a professional diagnosis is made, the next step is to develop a strategy for managing and treating lower back pain. In the podcast we discuss several approaches, focusing on the role of exercise and movement.

Here's what you need to know about effective back pain management:

Stay Active

Physical therapist Phil White stresses that prolonged rest is not the solution to lower back pain. Staying active is key to recovery. Light movement and gentle exercises help keep the muscles engaged and prevent stiffness. Walking, yoga, low to medium intensity resistance training and swimming are great low-impact activities that can support back health.

Start with Comfortable Movements

When beginning to address lower back pain, it's essential to start with movements that are within your comfort zone. Avoid intense workouts or exercises that exacerbate the pain. Instead, focus on gentle strength training and mobility exercises to improve movement and reduce tension.

Gradually Increase Intensity

As you build strength and flexibility, gradually increase the intensity of your exercises. This could involve incorporating bodyweight exercises like planks and bridges or using resistance to add challenge. A slow and steady approach helps prevent further injury and encourages steady progress.

Targeted Strengthening Exercises

Strengthening the whole body, (not just the lower back muscles) is vital for long-term relief. Aim on building up to exercises that carry over to real world scenarios like squats, deadlifts, bench press and pull ups should be your ultimate goal.

It’s also important to work on stabilizing muscles such as abdominal flexion and extension, trunk side flexion and extension, planks, bird-dogs and variations of the pallof press for anti rotation, which will provide additional support during movement.
