The Real Secret to Flexibility: Strength Training Through Full Range of Motion

The Real Secret to Flexibility: Strength Training Through Full Range of Motion

Are you stuck in your workout routine? Feeling like you're not making the progress you want?

Then, you're in for a treat!

Today we're breaking down lesson three from the Flexibility Blueprint 2023 edition in a special series on episode 352 of "The Sound Of Movement" podcast. In this episode we dive deep into how training opposing muscle groups can change your workouts for the better.

Feeling stuck in your flexibility journey? You're not alone. Many think flexibility is all about stretching, but there's another key factor—strength training. And not just any strength training, but full range of motion strength training. Let's dive in.

What is Full Range of Motion?

When you lift weights, do you go through the full range of motion? If not, you're missing out on building flexibility. Full range of motion means moving your muscles and joints as far as they can go safely. Doing this builds both strength and flexibility.

Think of basic gym exercises like squats, bench presses, and pull-ups. When done through a full range, these can help you become more flexible.

Why Does It Matter?

Flexibility and strength are two sides of the same coin. Training in a shortened range limits your flexibility. Athletes like weightlifters use full range of motion training to become both strong and flexible. They know that these two work together.

Before you jump into full range training, remember that range of motion is like the weight you lift—it’s a loading variable. If you're new to this, don't force yourself into deep ranges. Work up to it. Pushing too hard can lead to injuries. It's about "progressive overload," meaning you gradually increase your range over time.

What's Your Flexibility Stage?

Are you a beginner or more advanced in flexibility? At Unity Gym, we offer three stages to identify your needs:

Stage 1: Basic daily stretching for the whole body.

Stage 2: More focused workouts for specific movements.

Stage 3: Integrating strength and flexibility for optimal results.

Once you know your stage, you can zero in on what truly matters for you. This avoids the clutter of information out there.
